Future of Libya

The turmoil of the civil war following the end of the Gaddafi regime left a lasting scar on the state of political relations and peace in Libya. Today, the country remains damaged and deeply divided. This is a living tragedy for the people of Libya. There is now a deep and pressing need to set aside partisan adversity and seek ways for the institutions and conflicted political leadership of the country to work together to build a united, democratic nation.

This can only be achieved through an open dialogue between the governing parties in the country and the people of Libya. This is no small task, but the people of Libya today are desperate for the right to decide their future, to have their voices heard, to say how Libya should be governed. At the last scheduled elections in 2021, three million people registered to vote but then the democratic processes collapsed, leaving the Libyan people betrayed by self-serving disagreement and disunity at the highest levels of decision making.

Libya has the tools to be a rich and vibrant nation. It can also play a key role in stabilising global issues such as energy crises in Europe and beyond. Unlocking this potential requires a non-political, fresh, and stabilising transitional government that can bring to life the institutions necessary for a people’s choice on the future of Libya.
